The data mining tool MarVis (Marker Visualization) which has been designed for intensity-based clustering and visualization of large sets of metabolomic markers. MarVis supports a coarse-to-fine analysis scheme which involves two distinct layers: while the first layer provides a convenient overview of potential clusters based on one-dimensional self-organizing maps and color-coded intensity profiles, the second layer provides several utilities for detailed analysis of particular clusters selected by the user. Although MarVis has been developed for metabolome analysis, it can also be applied to experimental data e.g. from gene expression experiments
